About the construction of the complete Dortmund exhibition grounds
Author: Joachim Stähr, taken from ZGK 25
It's not really surprising that a model of Hall 1 at Dortmund's WESTFALENHALLEN attracted attention from visitors to the Intermodellbau exhibition at the WESTFALENHALLEN. In fact, it was Siegfried Neumärker's intention. Media reports about cardboard model making at that time were keen to feature the handy model. Colleagues were also interested, and some successfully recreated the hall, even though only an untested model kit was available.
In 2012, the management of the Dortmund Trade Fair Center declared that it would be interesting to exhibit a model of all the WESTFALENHALLEN halls. When Siegfried Neumärker was informed in 2015 that the renovation of the WESTFALENHALLEN would begin the following year and that a decision on a model of the current halls had to be made NOW, he began planning what would be by far the largest model in his collection.
As a Dortmund resident, he was able to explore and photograph even the most obscure corners of the halls by bike for months. Without the support of Google Earth, however, the project would surely have failed. So, over two years, he created hall after hall. It was a lot of work, but relatively stress-free. As a purist in cardboard modeling, he must admit that the large plane trees in the hall's parking lot were purchased and made of plastic.
Only the model of Hall 1 of the Westfalenhallen Dortmund is available for download on this website. In 2025, Messe Dortmund had this model sheet printed as a gift to exhibitors and visitors. The AGK thankfully received free copies for its members.
A report by Joachim Stähr about Siegfried Neumärker and his constructions was published in Issue 25 from the series "Zur Geschichte des Kartonmodellbaus".
